Combining ability of standardized indices for multi-trait selection in tobacco

ABSTRACT Several traits must be simultaneously considered in selection of tobacco cultivars for meeting the requirements farmers, manufacturers and consumers. Breeders should have an understanding associations between economically-important order to devise best strategy response all them. Utilization indices has been shown one most efficient selecting correlated characters. In tobacco, no reports can found within academic literature multiple trait selection. this study we demonstrate efficiency Sum Standardized Variables Index (SSV) multi-trait tobacco. The method was evaluated using a collection thirteen inbred lines hybrids derived diallel scheme. hybrids, parental lines, checks were two field locations. assessed yield (YLD), general quality index (GQI), leaf stem lamina ratio, percent total alkaloids, sugars. We weights according economic importance each trait: 0.4 YLD, 0.3 GQI 0.1 remaining SSV proved easy interpret, could used generate genetic gain almost characters desired direction. General combining ability (GCA) explained larger part variation analysis. mean heterosis estimate 2.02%. Some hybrid combinations exhibited levels greater than 10%, indicating that increased attention might need given commercialization F1 hybrids.
